Claims on the estates of Joseph and Hyrum Smith
Handwritten claims and bills submitted against the estates of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. The items request payments on charges made by the two men between 1841 and 1844. Joseph and Hyrum were brothers and leaders of the Mormon Church. They were murdered in 1844.
Reed C. Durham audiocassette
Audiocassette tape containing a lecture by Reed C. Durham entitled "Masons of Mormons" from the Mormon Historical Association meeting 1978.
Benjamin F. Johnson papers
The collection contains handwritten letters, a reminiscence, and a draft for an obituary. The reminiscence is by Sarah Melissa Johnson and relates to her life growing up in Nauvoo, Illinois. She mentions how her father was called to protect the Prophet Joseph Smith whom they considered to be in danger.
John Lambert letters
Handwritten letter and a photostat copy written by John Lambert to his brother Richard on 31 Jan. 1857. John defends his decision in following the Mormons to Utah and pleads with Richard to accept the leadership of Brigham Young (1801-1877), the second president of the Mormon Church. Also included is a letter by A. C. Lambert explaining the historical context ot the item.
G. C. Beamon letter to M. Badger and C. Hall
Typescript of a letter from Beamon to Methodist Church leaders in New York, appealing for aid and giving a description of Nauvoo during the exodus of the Mormons.
Albert R. Lyman histories
Typewritten family histories. Lyman writes about the Edward Patridge and Lucretia Hancock Robinson families. These families were early converts to the Mormon Church. They suffered persecutions, lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, came to Utah, and settled in Fillmore, Utah.
Sally Randall letter
Typed copy of a letter written in Nauvoo, Illinois, on July 1, 1844 and addressed to "Dear Friends." Randall writes about the murder of the first president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joseph Smith, and his brother, Hyrum.
Records on Mormon polygamy
Handwritten sections of a document on Mormon polygamy compiled and written by an unknown author. The materials are fragments from a document that included pages numbered at least to 196 pages. The item includes an analysis of Mormon polygamy and copies of affidavits relating to the practice of polygamy taken in Nauvoo, Illinois in 1844.
Sidney Rigdon letters
Photocopies of handwritten letters. One of which is addressed to John C. Bennett, Mormon Apostle and mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois, in which Rigdon announces his resignation as a city coucilman. Rigdon also writes to the state legislature of Pennsylvania seeking redress for the persectutions suffered by the Mormons in Missouri.
