Nelson Higgins certificates

Scope and Contents Photocopies of handwritten and printed certificates, applications, correspondence, patriarchal blessings, and miscellaneous items. Most of the materials relate to Nelson's militia activities in Nauvoo, Illinois and in Utah. They include certificates relating to his various military appointments and applications for pensions relating to his military service. William Henry Hooper letter

Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter addressed to the "Hon. E. Smith, Probate Judge for Great Salt Lake Co." Hooper states that he is submitting an inventory of the estate of the late Almon Whiting Babbitt. The estate items were to be set apart for the use of the deceased's widow and family.

Edward Hunter letter

Handwritten letter and typescript. The letter is dated November 27, 1882 and is addressed to Nancy Kennedy. Hunter expresses concern over the disenfranchising of members of the Mormon Church by the United States government.

Hans Peter Larsen autobiography

Scope and Contents

Typewritten copy of an autobiography. Larsen was converted to the Mormon Church in Denmark, migrated to Utah in 1855, served in the Utah Militia during the Utah Expedition of 1857-1858, helped build the fort at Wellsville, Utah, and settled in Mendon, Utah.

William Maughn pardon

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a handwritten presidential pardon signed by Benjamin Harrison. William Maughn, a Mormon polygamist, had been convicted of adultery and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. His case was reviewed, and the conviction was changed to unlawful cohabitation which carried a prison term of six months. Since Maughn had already served that amount of time, Harrison ordered him released.

W. Medieo letters

Scope and Contents

Handwritten copybook letters apparently signed by W. Medieo and addressed to Brigham Young and William H. Hooper. The letter addressed to Brigham Young informs him that his account has been adjusted for the fiscal year 1856-57 with the Treasury. The item addressed to Hooper relates to his application to be the acting "Secretary Pro tem" of Utah.

Scope and Contents Handwritten diaries, correspondence, lists, minutes, patriarchal blessings, and notes. The materials relate to Nuttall's involvement in numerous Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Utah Militia activities. Nuttall's position as secretary to the president of the Church allowed him to record various observations on Church conduct and doctrine. J. W. Phelps diaries

Scope and Contents These diaries are photocopied from a microfilm copy of the handwritten originals. Phelps kept the diaries primarily when he was involved in the Utah Expedition from 1857 to 1858 and the subsequent military occupation of Utah from 1858 to 1859. These items are volumes 15 to 26 of his diaries. Phelps writes about going to Utah "for suppression of the Mormons." He makes many negative comments on the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He tells about the expedition...
