Charles Atmore letter
Handwritten letter dated March 22, 1853, addressed to "Brother and Sister," and written in Mud Springs, California. Atmore writes about leaving his home in Michigan and going to California in search of gold and becoming a farmer there. He also describes California and the problems in looking for gold there.
Biography of John and Louise Smith Park
Typewritten copy of Mary's biography of her parents, but the bulk of the account is autobiographical. Mary tells of coming to Utah in 1847 including incidents en route. She tells of the early settlement of Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah including problems with Indians, crickets and grass hoppers, and the difficult living conditions.
William Clark letter
Handwritten and signed letter to acquire three quarts of whiskey "for the use of the Chickasaw Indians."
Dudley family correspondence
21 ALS's (plus typescripts of 11) referring to family matters, exhortations to join the Mormon Church, and descriptions of Nauvoo and settlement of Utah.
Lyman Hinman letter to "Brother and Sister Taylor"
Typescript of a letter which tells of his experiences with the Emmett Company of Mormon immigrants.
John K. Kane letter
Handwritten and signed letter dated February 1, 1846 and addressed to "dear Sir." Kane writes that he has recently been visited by a "Mr. Benson and Mr. Little" of the Mormon Church. They asked Kane's opinion of a case relating to a Joseph Sidwell. Kane comments on the Mormon plans to emigrate to the West U.S. "I am thoroughly convinced of the general integrity and right mindedness of this persecuted sect."
Samuel Millikan letters
Eleven typewritten copies and one holograph. In letters to his wife, Rhoda, Millikan describes the difficulties and fears of a man travelling over the plains to Salt Lake Valley, Utah, and on to the California gold fields. His letters, while descriptive of the terrain and events encountered, are full of love and yearning for home and family.
C. E. Mitchel letter
Handwritten and signed letter written from Fuerte Larma describing an overland trek by wagon train.
Much esteemed friends
Handwritten and unsigned letter dated 19 May 1850. Item was written by an unidentified member of a wagon train and includes some detail about the author's preparation for the trip to California. The letter describes the overland journey from Saint Joseph, Missouri to the Platte River and ends 80 miles from Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Author mentions dining on buffalo, weather conditions, and cooking on the plains.
