Charles Atmore letter
Handwritten letter dated March 22, 1853, addressed to "Brother and Sister," and written in Mud Springs, California. Atmore writes about leaving his home in Michigan and going to California in search of gold and becoming a farmer there. He also describes California and the problems in looking for gold there.
Claude Vincent and Lillie Liston Baker collection
This collection is composed of personal letters, histories and rememberances from the Claude Vincent and Lillie Liston Baker family. It provides an intimate and loving portrait of a Mormon family and their struggle to tame southern Utah.
Biography of John and Louise Smith Park
Typewritten copy of Mary's biography of her parents, but the bulk of the account is autobiographical. Mary tells of coming to Utah in 1847 including incidents en route. She tells of the early settlement of Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah including problems with Indians, crickets and grass hoppers, and the difficult living conditions.
Sam Brannan correspondence and other material
Handwritten and signed correspondence and legal documents. Most of the correspondence is from Sam Brannan to Jesse C. Little from 1880 to 1888, and he discusses his efforts to colonize and mine in Sonora, Mexico. Also includes some correspondence from Little to Brannan, dated 1885-1888, and printed documents, maps, and other papers related to colonizing and mining in Mexico. Dated approximately 1875 to 1888.
Richard Evelyn Byrd letter
Typewritten and signed letter. Byrd writes to Melvin H. Schoberlin of Denver, Colorado, on 18 Aug. 1928 to inform him that he will not be able to carry a letter for Schoberlin on the upcoming "Byrd Antartic Expedition."
Eliza Ann Beebe Cheney letter
Typewritten copy of a letter written in January 1848 and addressed to "Dear Parents, Brothers & Sisters." The item was written in Winter Quarters, Nebraska. Cheney writes about the persecutions suffered by the Mormons and other aspects of the Mormon faith.
William Clark letter
Handwritten and signed letter to acquire three quarts of whiskey "for the use of the Chickasaw Indians."
Leonard S. Conger letter
Handwritten and signed letter and typescript. The item was written in 1861 in the Nebraska Territory by Conger to his brother Levi in New York. Conger gives a brief description of his travel itinerary as well as making a plea to receive communications from family and friends.
Dudley family correspondence
21 ALS's (plus typescripts of 11) referring to family matters, exhortations to join the Mormon Church, and descriptions of Nauvoo and settlement of Utah.
E. R. C. letter
Handwritten letter written in San Francisco, California, dated May 28, 1852, addressed to "My dear Squanquill," and signed E.R.C. The author was some sort of United States government official who had been recently sent to San Francisco to investigate government matters there. E.R.C. describes some of his work in California and his journey by ship to Panama, across the isthmus and from there to San Francisco.
