Handwritten pardon issued by the office of the president of the United States, Chester A. Arthur (1829-1886) and signed by him. The item pardons John J. Kelly of Utah for crimes of "bigamy or polygamy and unlawful cohabitation."

Abstract

The folder contains a handwritten letter dated 5 May 1884 and addressed to Clara Jane Riding. Cort informs Riding that he would strike her name from the list of registered voters if she did not come to the court house and take the appropriate oath against the practice of "bigamy."

John Claiborne Harper papers

Scope and Contents Handwritten diary, letters, certificates, paroles, and Mormon Church blessings. The diary was kept while Harper served on a mission to the Southern States for the Mormon Church from 1887 to 1888. Also included is an autograph book signed by Mormons in the Utah State prison for polygamy in 1889. The certificates and letters relate to Mormons in Mexico, to Harper's civic appointments in Payson, and to family matters. Two paroles were given to Harper on 10 April 1865 at Appomattox Court...

William Maughn pardon

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a handwritten presidential pardon signed by Benjamin Harrison. William Maughn, a Mormon polygamist, had been convicted of adultery and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. His case was reviewed, and the conviction was changed to unlawful cohabitation which carried a prison term of six months. Since Maughn had already served that amount of time, Harrison ordered him released.

Scope and Contents

Letters written primarily from Spanish Fork, Utah, to relatives in St. Johns, Arizona. Monk describes farm life and relates the legal problems of Mormons practicing polygamy. One letter dated August 27, 1888 describes Monk's life in a Utah prison for polygamy.

Scope and Contents Handwritten diaries, correspondence, lists, minutes, patriarchal blessings, and notes. The materials relate to Nuttall's involvement in numerous Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Utah Militia activities. Nuttall's position as secretary to the president of the Church allowed him to record various observations on Church conduct and doctrine. Typewritten excerpt taken from a "memo of his life and selections from his letters 1861-1872." Seward writes about coming to Utah by train and describes what he saw in Salt Lake City. He met the president of the Mormon Church, Brigham Young (1801-1877), and relates what Young said about Mormon polygamy.
