John E. Bennion diaries

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of handwritten diaries. Bennion writes about his life in the Taylorsville area of Utah and in Rush Valley and Long Valley, Utah. He also lived for a time in Nevada. Bennion was married polygamously, participated in the Utah War of 1857-1858, had an encounter with an Indian in 1858, saw the first handcart company arrive in Salt Lake City in 1856, served on a mission to England for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and participated in many other activities.

James Stephens Brown diaries

Scope and Contents

Typescript of diaries. Brown writes about his life in Ogden, Utah, and in Arizona. He also tells about his activities in the Mormon Church including his missions for that faith to England and Tahiti.

William Butler autobiographies and letters

Scope and Contents This collection consists of autobiographies and personal letters. Included are four personal histories of varying lengths. Butler described his visions, business matters, family relationships, church assignments, missions served, and recounted many colorful experiences including hunting down and killing the murderer of one of his children. Benjamin C. Critchlow correspondence

The collection includes three letters written by Benjamin C. Critchlow between 1872 and 1887. The first is to his parents and dates from his mission; the second two were written to his wife Martha while he was hiding for polygamy.

John Claiborne Harper papers

Scope and Contents Handwritten diary, letters, certificates, paroles, and Mormon Church blessings. The diary was kept while Harper served on a mission to the Southern States for the Mormon Church from 1887 to 1888. Also included is an autograph book signed by Mormons in the Utah State prison for polygamy in 1889. The certificates and letters relate to Mormons in Mexico, to Harper's civic appointments in Payson, and to family matters. Two paroles were given to Harper on 10 April 1865 at Appomattox Court...

John Henry Hayes autobiography

Scope and Contents

Handwritten autobiography with a photocopy of the item. The item was written as an autobiography with yearly summaries of activities. Hayes migrated to Utah in 1862 and lived in Spanish Fork, Utah, during the Black Hawk War with the Ute Indians. Hayes was a Mormon polygamist, served on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England, and lived in numerous places and had numerous occupations in Utah.

Ole Anderson Jensen autobiographies and diaries

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of handwritten diaries. Jensen joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1859, served on a mission to Denmark, and immigrated to the United States in 1863. He was a polygamist who lived in Cache Valley, Utah, and in Star Valley, Wyoming. Also included is a biography of Alma L. Jensen by Annie Jensen Wickham.

Mads Jorgensen diaries and Letters

Scope and Contents

Handwritten letters and a diary. Also included are typescripts of diaries. Some items are in Danish. Most of the materials were produced when Jorgensen was serving on a mission for the Mormon Church in Scandinavia. The letters were written to his wives. His diaries also cover the time he spent in prison for polygamy.

James Keeler diaries

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of handwritten diaries. Keeler writes about his activities while serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii from 1850 to 1855 and from 1876 to 1878. Keeler also writes about his life in Utah as a carpenter and farmer. Also included is a diary of Eliza Shelton Keeler, James' wife, which she kept from 1891 to 1902. The Keelers lived much of the time in Richfield, Utah.

Biographies of Peter Madsen

Scope and Contents

Typewritten biographies of Peter Madsen written by some of his descendants. Madsen was the bishop of the Lake View Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lake View, Utah, for thirty years. He migrated to Utah, was a prominent fisherman on Utah Lake, and went on missions for the Church to Hawaii and to Denmark.
