Carlos Ashby Badger papers

Photocopies of diaries, correspondence, and scrapbooks. The correspondence is largely between Carlos Badger and his wife Rose Jenkins Badger. Most of the diaries were kept while Badger served as personal secretary to the United States Senator from Utah, Reed Smoot. The materials deal with the congressional hearings dealing with Smoot, mormon polygamy, Mormon temple endowments, and the politics of both Utah and the United States

James Stephens Brown diaries

Scope and Contents

Handwritten diaries. Brown writes about his life in Ogden, Utah, and in Arizona. He also tells about his activities in the Mormon Church including his missions for that faith to England, Tahiti, and the Navajo Indians.

Angus M. Cannon diaries and letters

Scope and Contents

Collection includes three handwritten diaries dated 1885 to 1886 two letters from 1891. In his diaries, Cannon writes about his imprisonment at the Utah State Penitentiary for polygamy and his subseqent experiences as a stake president for the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City, Utah. His letters are addressed to his sons George and John, and to Levi Colvin of Payson, Utah. Photocopies and typescripts of the diaries are also included.

Charles Shuster Zane autobiography

Scope and Contents

Mimeographed copy of a typewritten autobiography. Zane writes about his early life as a student and as a lawyer in Springfield, Illinois. He tells about his personal acquaintance with Abraham Lincoln and about hearing Lincoln give formal speeches on several occasions. Zane was appointed a federal judge in 1884 for the territory of Utah and writes about presiding over a number of important cases relating to polygamy in Utah. He later practiced law in Utah.

Thomas Waters Cropper autobiography

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography. Some of the item is in Cropper's own hand. The rest was dictated to his daughters. Cropper was born in Texas, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and migrated to Utah in 1856. One fourth of the original party turned back in 1853 when they heard of the Mormon doctrine of polygamy. He describes the immigrant group killed by Mormons at Mountain Meadows in 1857. Cropper lived in Fillmore, Utah, and later moved to Deseret, Utah. ...

Ebenezer Crouch autobiography

Scope and Contents

Typescript of an autobiography. Crouch was born in Tumbridge Wells, Kent, England; migrated to America in 1856; and came to Utah in 1859. Crouch tells about encounters with Ute Indians, describes Orrin Porter Rockwell, and writes about being married polygamously. He lived in numerous places in Utah and had several occupations.

Moses Franklin Farnsworth papers

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, record books, pension petitions, certificates, pamphlets, articles of incorporation, poems, blessings, poems, and miscellaneous items. The materials relate to Farnsworth's activities particulary in the Mormon Church. Included in the collection are letters from the fourth president of the Mormon Church, Willford Woodruff, patriarchal blessings, letters relating to Mormon polygamy, and a book recording the work done in the Manti Temple of the Mormon Church.

Biographical sketches of the life of William Grant

Scope and Contents

Handwritten autobiography and diary. Grant wrote his autobiography in 1882. Subsequently he kept a journal in the same volume. The diary consists mainly of monthly summaries of Grant's activities. Grant writes about his conversion to the Mormon Church in England, his migration to American Fork, Utah, and his activities as a businessman and musician. Grant also comments on Mormon polygamy.

Jens Hansen diary

Scope and Contents

Collection contains two photocopies of Jens Hansen's diary from 1886, which includes an account of his trial and experience in the territorial penitentiary. Diary is written in parallel versions, one a narrative account and the other a series of daily entries. Also includes copies of autograph book entries written by Hansen during his stay. His entries describe conditions and activities in the prison, and his relationship with his family.

William Alonzo Hyde letter

Scope and Contents

Handwritten and signed letter addressed to Mrs. Louisa W. Holmes, Hyde's aunt in Fulton, Illinois. The item was written in Kaysville, Utah, on 26 Nov. 1885. Hyde defends the beliefs of the Mormon Church particularly the practice of polygamy.
