McArthur was born in New York State; joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint in 1832; lived in Kirtland, Ohio, in Missouri, and in Nauvoo, Illinois. McArthur stayed at Winter Quarters, Nebraska, migrated to Utah in 1848, experienced troubles with Ute Indians, and served on a mission to England for the LDS Church from 1852 to 1856.
