John A. Powel journal

Handwritten journal of Powel's overland journey from Illinois to Linn County, Oregon in 1851. Includes daybook of receipts and expenses and a record of marriages performed by Powel. Daily diary entries mostly deal with traveling conditions and the geography of the trail. Early entries mention passing through a Mormon settlement. Powel also briefly notes the death of his daughter, Therissa, from complications related to childbirth.

Typescript of discourse given by Lyman on the "Nature of the Mission of Jesus Christ" in Dundee, Scotland, on March 16, 1862. The text is from the version that was printed in the "The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star" no. 14, Vol. 24, April 5, 1862. There is writing at the top of the copy indicating that this copy was given by Edna Lyman Houtz, granddaughter of Amasa M. Lyman. Materials dated 1862.

Scope and Contents This is a typescript of a diary of a Mexican War soldier who served in the "Mormon Battalion." The diary was kept from 16 July 1846 to 10 Sept. 1847 with a few entries for the years 1848-1855. He was also among the first groups to enter Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847.
