Carlos Ashby Badger papers

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of diaries, correspondence, and scrapbooks. The correspondence is largely between Carlos Badger and his wife Rose Jenkins Badger. Most of the diaries were kept while Badger served as personal secretary to the United States Senator from Utah, Reed Smoot. The materials deal with the congressional hearings dealing with Smoot, mormon polygamy, Mormon temple endowments, and the politics of both Utah and the United States

Contains minute books, ledgers, balance books, cash books, blotter books, stock certificate books, and letter press books. The materials document operations of the First National Bank of Provo, the Provo Commercial and Savings Bank, and the Ogden State Bank. Collection includes stock certificates for John Taylor, Reed Smoot, Erastus Snow, George Q. Cannon, A. O. Smoot, and others. Also includes notes and letters of Reed Smoot, Warren Dusenberry, and others. 131 v.

The funeral services of John W. Hoover

Scope and Contents

Typewritten copy of the funeral services for John Whitmer Hoover on 29 May 1902. Among the speakers was the Mormon Apostle, Reed Smoot. Among the other speakers were John Edge Booth, Myron Tanner, and David John. Hoover's father joined the Mormon Church and moved his family to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1842 and later to Utah. John Hoover was a miller who married Mary Coursey in 1855 and lived in Springville, Utah. He moved to Provo, Utah in 1861. Also included is a biography of Hoover.

Francis W. Kirkham correspondence

Scope and Contents

Typewritten and signed correspondence. Eight of the items were sent to Kirkham and one was sent by him. These items were to and from General Authorities and other leaders of the Mormon Church. The collection includes letters from Oscar A. Kirkham, A. Theodore Tuttle, Marvin J. Ashton, LeGrand Richards, S. Dilworth Young, and Reed Smoot. These persons thank Kirkham for sending them copies of his books.

James S. Martin correspondence

Scope and Contents Handwritten and typewritten correspondence. Three of the items were received by Martin and one was sent by him. One of the letters is from James H. Wolfe, an attorney in Salt Lake City, Utah, and another is from C. G. Patterson, a resident of Salt Lake City. Both Wolfe and Patterson are concerned with the Mormon Church's domination of politics in Utah. Reed Smoot certificate

Scope and Contents

Printed form with handwritten notations. A certificate appointing Reed Smoot, Latter-day Saint Church leader and later Utah Senator, as director of the Territorial Insane Asylum in Utah. On reverse is an affidavit signed by Smoot swearing to support the U.S. Constitution, especially the acts regarding polygamy.

Scope and Contents Collection contains items relating to Reed Smoot, including two framed documents and one framed photograph. One of the documents certifies that Reed Smoot was chosen to be a representative of Utah for six years beginning on March 4, 1909. It is signed by Utah Governor William Spry.
