Elisabeth Hevelius letters
Scope and Contents
Transferred from the Eugene Fairfield McPike Papers (Mss. 2390).
A petition for a medical cure for arthritis. Presumably she wanted to help her husband who suffered from arthritis. The letter was translated by A. H. White for Eugene F. McPike and was included in McPike's publication, Hevelius, Flamsteed and Halley: Three Contemporary Astronomers and Their Mutual Relations (London: Taylor and Francis, 1937): 5-6. Also includes three letters from Huntington Library (San Marino, CA) written in 1938 related to Eugene F. McPike's query concerning secret writings on the blank areas of the 1680 letter. The third letter states that there are no secret writings. McPike had possession of the letter at the time of this inquiry.

Custodial History
In 1932, Frau Amelie Hevelke, one of the correspondents of Eugene McPike (1870-1946), obtained the letter from a "Frau Pastor B." in Zoppot(en)?, Germany. Hevelke then sent the letter to McPike through a Miss Lunan. McPike placed it among his own correspondence (see MSS 2390, box 45, "Letters from Danzig, Paris, etc." 25 August 1932). McPike's papers, including his correspondence and letterbooks, were donated to the San Diego Multi-Regional Family History Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who then gave the collection to BYU.
