Scope and Contents
Handwritten autobiography of Hillman describing his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his later experiences. He writes about the persecutions and problems the Mormons faced in Kirtland, Ohio, Missouri, and Nauvoo, Illinois. He also writes about encounters with Ute Indians during the 1850s following his migration to Utah. Also included are family financial records. Collection includes photocopy of materials.

Biographical / Historical
Silas Hillman (1820-1876) was an early Mormon convert and Utah pioneer.
Silas Hillman was born on February 27, 1820 in Cambridge, New York to Mayhew and Sarah King Hillman. He and his family were early converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and lived in Kirtland, Ohio, Missouri, and Nauvoo, Illinois. In 1846 he left Nauvoo with the Mormon emigration, and was selected to help with a way-station in Coonville, Iowa. In 1852 he continued on to Utah and settled in Provo, Spanish Fork, and eventually in Faust (Tooele County). There he worked as a schoolteacher and rancher. He also served in the territorial legislature in 1853, and served in the militia in Sanpete County during the Walker War. Hillman died in 1876 in Vernon, Utah.
