Scope and Contents
Typewritten manuscript of an unpublished book entitled; "Infatuation: A Fiction Founded on Fact," written by John Hyde (1833-1875). The work is a novel based on Hyde's negative experiences with Mormonism. The "author's brother" opens the manuscript with a preface dated May 1879. Also included is an excerpt from the book and introduction by the John Hyde, dated July 1857.

Biographical / Historical
John Hyde was born February 25, 1833, in London, England, to John Hyde and Martha Marmoy. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 15 or 16, and was sent on a mission to France in 1851. In 1853, he traveled to Utah, where he married Lavinia Hawkins. They had two sons that died in infancy. John was also sent to Hawaii, then known as the Sandwich Islands, on a mission. John became dissatisfied with the faith and did not return to Utah, eventually going back to England in 1858. He later joined the Swedenborgian religion. John died August 18, 1875, in England.
