Administrative History

The Department of Speech (1929-1953) was part of the College of Fine Arts at Brigham Young University and was responsible for courses in speech and dramatic arts.

The Department of Speech was created under the direction of the College of Fine Arts in 1929. It replaced the former Department of Public Speaking and Dramatic Art. Department chairmen included: Alonzo J. Morley (1930), T. Earl Pardoe (1931-1951), Harold I. Hansen (1952-1953).

The Department of Speech was responsible for the teaching of the following courses: principles of speech, open forum discussion, speech analysis, elementary elocution, Classical Literature, dramatic monologue, interpretative literature, dialogue and scene presentation, representative dialect, practical phonetics, advanced speech composition, religious public speaking, argument and debate, impersonation, play production, stage craft, history of dramatic production, dramatic technique, public speaking, voice and speech improvement, and methods of teaching speech.

The department was administered by the department chairman, under the direction of the college dean.

Administrative History

The Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts (1953-1961) at Brigham Young University offered a variety of courses, covering material in theater and dramatic arts, public speaking, speech and hearing rehabilitation, radio and television, and general speech for teachers in secondary schools.

The Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts was created in 1953 in the College of Fine Arts; in 1961, it was split administratively into the Department of Speech and the Department of Dramatic Arts. Faculty and courses continued to be shared between the two departments, however. Harold I. Hansen served as chairman from 1955-1961.

The department was headed by a chairman under the direction of the college dean.

Administrative History

The Department of Dramatic Arts (1961-1968) at Brigham Young University focused on preparing students for teaching in schools and to meet the competition in professional theatre, radio and television.

The Department of Dramatic Arts was established following the split of the Dept. of Speech and Dramatic Arts. The department was housed within the College of Fine Arts and then, in 1964, the College of Fine Arts and Communications. Those who served as Department Chairmen were: Harold I. Hansen (1961-1966) and Lael J. Woodbury. In 1968 the curriculum taught in the Department of Dramatic Arts became part of the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts.

The department was administered by a department chair, under direction of the college dean. The department was under the jurisdiction of the College of Fine Arts (1961-1964), as well as the College of Fine Arts and Communications (1964-1968).

The Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts (1968-1975) offered courses in speech, dramatic arts, and communicative habilitation at Brigham Young University.

In 1968 the Department of Dramatic Arts and the Department of Speechwere combined to form the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts. This department helped students prepare to become teachers, directors, actors, clinicians, or members of any one of several related professions. This department focused on two separate subjects, speech and dramatic arts. The speech portion offered a public address major and selected courses for personal development in argumentation and debate, communication theory, discussion, public speaking, rhetoric, and speech criticism. The dramatic acts curriculum was designed to lead to professional competency in teaching on the secondary level, in acting, directing, or playwriting, or in technical theatre.

Lael J. Woodbury (1968-1972) and Parley W. Newman (1972-1975) served as department chairs until 1975 when the department was renamed the Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts.

The Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts (1975-1987) offered courses in film and theatre arts at Brigham Young University.

In 1975 the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts was renamed the Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts. This department offered students a comprehensive education in the art, production, history, and technical elements of theatre, film, and videotape production. In 1987 it was renamed the Department of Theatre, Speech, and Cinema. Charles L. Metten (1976-1980) and Harold R. Oakes (1980-1987) served as department chairs durring its existance.

Also to provide comprehensive programs designed to produce graduates and products that delight, edify, and enlarge the human spirit. Degrees offered are Film (BFA); Musical Dance Theatre (BFA); Film (B.A.); Speech (B.A.); Theatre Arts (B.A.); Theatre Arts Education (B.A.); Acting (MFA); Directing (MFA); Playwriting (MFA); Theatre Design and Technology (MFA); Theatre History, Theory, Criticism (M.A.); Motion Picture History, Theory, Criticism (M.A.); Child Drama (M.A.) and Theatre, and Cinema (Ph.D.) The Department of Theatre, Speech, and Cinema was directly managed by a Department Chair who was under the direction of the College Dean.

The Department of Theatre and Film was part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications beginning in 1988. Previously, the department was known as the Department of Theatre, Speech, and Cinema. In 1997 the name of the department was changed to Theatre and Media Arts. The Department Chairs were: Harold R. Oaks (1988-1994) and Eric Fielding (1994-1997).

The Department of Theatre and Media Arts has been a part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications since 1997. It was previously known as the Department of Visual Arts. The Department of Theatre and Media Arts is directly managed by a Department Chair who acts under the direction of the College Dean. The Department Chairs are: Eric Fielding (1997-1998), Robert A. Nelson (1998-2005), Rodger D. Sorensen (2005-present).
