Scope and Contents

Contains a handwritten diary kept by Chapman Duncan, written from 1852 to 1861. The volume contains an autobiography, journal entries, school attendance roles, notes about the number of students Duncan taught, and a portion of a constitution and set of bylaws of the original Iron City Mine in Iron County, Utah. In his autobiography, Duncan briefly mentions his service with the Joseph Smith Presidential Campaign in Virginia, his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to China in 1852, and his travels with the Willard Richard Company and the Chester Loveland Company across the American plains to Utah. The collection also contains photocopies of all pages in the diary, a typed copy of the diary, a typed copy of a destroyed section of the diary, and a separate handwritten 5-page story possibly from 1854 by an unknown author. Biographical / Historical

Chapman Duncan was born July 1, 1812, in Bath, New Hampshire, to John Duncan and Betsy Taylor Putnam. At the age of 21, in 1833, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Duncan was a member of the Mormon Battalion and was involved in the early historical events of the church in Nauvoo, Illinois, including serving in the Joseph Smith Presidential Campaign Mission in 1844. In 1938, Duncan married Rebecca Rose in Lee, Iowa. His family traveled with the Willard Richards Company across the plains to Utah in 1848. Duncan served as Captain of 1st Ten in the second company. He was called to help settle Iron County, Utah, in 1851. Duncan also travelled across the plains with the Chester Loveland Company in 1857, serving as company chaplain. He was a missionary, serving in the China Mission from 1852 to 1853, as well as in Vermont and Virginia. Duncan died December 22, 1900 in Loa, Utah.
