Eugene E. Campbell interview
Scope and Contents
Transcript of an interview conducted by Anita Louise Hummel on November 19, 1982 for the Ray Hillam war project. Cambell volunteered to be a military chaplain for the United States. He became a chaplain in 1944. He said he was under artillery fire and in dangerous positions in France. He carried no firearms and never shot at anyone. He visited wounded men in hospitals. He visited concentration camps and described the starving and dying people he saw there. He was designated as a Protestant chaplain even though he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Campbell was supposed to make sure that the men had the opportunity to attend religious services as often as possible. He also sent letters to the next of kin of those who were killed, and this assignment was very difficult for him.
