Elijah Bishop diary
Scope and Contents
Handwritten diary dated from 7 April 1822 to 20 Jan. 1829. Bishop states, "Elijah Bishop is my name, and American is my nation, Elizabeth Town is my dwelling place, and Christ is my salvation." The manuscript documents the regligious odyssey of a man of upstate New York, ranging from a spiritual visionary ecstasy to a time of virtual despair. A few entries are in code, reflecting Bishop's intense concern with the daily state of his spiritual conditon. There are many gaps in the diary.
