Account of the Poet Caedmon
Scope and Contents
Photographs of an original manuscript by Beda Venerabilis. The item is an extract from Bede's "Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum" (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People) which gives an account of the poet Caedmon. The account gives a list of the subjects treated by Caedmon, relates the story of his miraculous rise to fame, praises the poet's virtue and the power of his verse to promote virtue in others, and concludes with a description of his saintly death. The original manuscript resides at Oxford University.
