Scope and Contents

Handwritten diary and missionary appointment books kept by Albert T. Smith while serving a mission to Birmingham, England, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The diary contains short descriptions of daily mission work, dated May 21, 1911, to February 8, 1912. The appointment books document number of contacts, places traveled, and appointment times. Materials are dated 1910-1912.

Biographical / Historical

Albert Thomas Smith was born to William Edward Smith and Jane Blencowe on June 23, 1875, in Kaysville, Utah. He married Ellen Colemere Blood on May 27, 1895, in Kaysville, Utah, and they had six children. Albert worked as a traveling salesman for Singer sewing machines, as a railroad worker with the Union Pacific Railroad, and as a clerk for a mercantile shop. He also farmed in Clearfield, Utah.

At age 27 in 1910, Albert was called to serve in the Birmingham, England mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was released at the end of 1912 and went home to continue working and expanding his farm. Albert started the Smith Canning Company in Clearfield, Utah, in 1919, one of the largest in Utah at the time. He also later served as president of Utah Canners Association. Albert died March 2, 1959, in Clearfield, Utah.
