Biographical / Historical

Provo Foundry and Machine Co. was created in December 1884 by Harvey H. Cluff and John E. Booth. Their original adobe and brink building, which was formerly Cluff Hall theater, stood on the corner of 200 North and 200 East in Provo, Utah. The Provo Foundry and Machine Co. cast the pillars of the Provo Tabernacle in 1885-1886. The company was the largest operating company for manufacturing machinery and working brass and iron in Provo City as of 1888. After closing in 1888, Thomas Pierpont leased Cluff Hall and reopened Provo Foundry and Machine Co. in the spring of 1889. Under his ownership, the company created the largest boiler made in the Utah territory. In August 1891, the company cast 1500-pound columns for the ballroom of Academy Square, now known as the Provo City Library. The foundry closed again due to the financial crisis of 1893 but later reopened in June 1895 under the leadership of Thomas F. Pierpont and Harry Heaton. They focused on creating harvesting machinery, mining cars, iron and brass castings, surgical instruments, boilers, as well as bicycle repair and plumbing. The company moved to a larger location in 1899 at the corner of 500 West and Center Street in Provo, Utah. By March 1904, the partnership dissolved leaving Pierpont as the sole owner of the foundry. The company was still open as of 1949.
