Biographical / Historical
George Fiske was born October 21, 1835 in Amhert, New Hampshire to David Fiske and Harriet Nurse Fiske. In 1858, he moved to Sacramento, California where he worked as a banking clerk for his half-brother. By 1864, he was working as a freelance photographer in San Francisco. Between 1868 and 1879, he worked as an assistant to Carleton E. Watkins and he worked with Eadweard Muybridge photographing Yosemite. He married Elmira F. Morrill on April 16, 1873 in San Jose, California. After her death in 1897, he met and married Caroline "Carrie" Paul on October 17, 1898; she died in 1917. In 1879, Fiske moved to the Yosemite Valley, where he became the first year-round resident photographer. He stayed there for rest of his life, until he died on October 20, 1918.
