Joseph M. Bauman collection of photographs of Utah
Scope and Contents
Collection contains 740 photographs, including 719 prints made by Brigham Young University of 594 negatives and 125 transparencies. The photographs were taken between approximately 1910 and 1929. They are photographs of places throughout Utah. Many are taken in the wilderness, especially in the mountains. There are also photographs of small towns and farms, and many of these are portraits of at least one person. There are also photographs of the interior and exterior of houses and some photographs of machinery. There are also some close-up photographs of insects and some plants.

Photographs and prints (boxes 1-2): Open for public research. Items kept in cold storage; access requires 24 hours advance notice.
Negatives and transparencies (boxes 3-5): Condition restricted; permission to use materials must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services.

Biographical History
Joseph M. Bauman (1946- ) is a writer.
Joseph M. Bauman was born in 1946. He has worked as a reporter for WBOC TV in Salisbury, Maryland, The Beachcomber of Ocean City, Maryland, and the Delmarva News of Selbyville, Delaware. In 1971 he returned to Salt Lake City, Utah and began a job as a reporter for the Deseret News. He won state-wide and regional journalism contests, covering the environment, the military, federal courts and other beats. He has interviewed veterans of every American war from the Spanish American to Iraq and Afghanistan. He has traveled to Bosnia twice on assignment. For much of his career he wrote a weekly column. His book "Stone House Lands: The San Rafael Reef" was published by the University of Utah Press in 1987. He retired from the newspaper in 2008, after 36 1/2 years, and began an astronomy blog for the Deseret News. His main focus today is writing. He published another book, "Don't Tread on Me: Photographs and Life Stories of American Revolutionaries" in 2012.
