Biographical / Historical

William Francis Hooker was born on May 17, 1856 in Wisconsin to Darius D. Hooker and Mary Ann Hooker. In May 1874, he began working as a bullwhacker, someone who drove an ox wagon in the early settled western United States, to deliver supplies to Native American reservations and army posts. In this role, William was one of the founders of the Sidney trails. He knew Buffalo Bill and General Custer. He was the editor of "Erie Railroad Magazine" and the author of the book "Bullwhacker Adventures of a Frontier Freighter" He married Ella L. Tibbits on September 30, 1878, in Wisconsin. William died an accomplished author and bullwhacker on December 24, 1938, in Florida.
