John Paternoster Squires diary excerpts
Scope and Contents
Photocopies of typescripts of diary excerpts, a biographical sketch, and family genealogies. There are many gaps in the diary. Squires writes about his early life, joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1847, and migrating to Utah in 1853. He also discusses his polygamous marriages; his mission to England; his life in Salt Lake City, Utah; his attempts to avoid being arrested by federal officials for polygamy; his trial for unlawful cohabitation; and his subsequent time spent in the Utah penitentiary.
