Biographical / Historical

Dorothy R. Knauss was born in 1937. She began playing piano at age 6, and then harp at age 13. In high school, she studied in Philadelphia with Dorothy Johnston Baseler and later at New England Conservatory in Boston with Alfred Holy. After graduation, she went on tour with Student Prince and Blossom Time operettas. Following this, she went back home and studied harp with renowned Marcel Grandjay who was a professor at Juilliard. She played as the first harpist for 34 years with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra and was a solo harpist for Allentown Concert Band for 67 years. She spent 56 years with the Allentown Municipal Opera Company as well. Dorothy had almost 500 students on both piano and harp over her long career as a teacher. in 2004, she was awarded the Arts Ovation Award from the city of Allentown. She passed away in her home in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on January 14, 2010.
