Scope and Contents

Papers of Max and Jean Hanks, including letters sent between Max and Jean while Max was serving in the military, Max Hank's certificates and military and flight records, family photographs in black and white and color, including photographs of ancestors, scrapbooks, family history letters and documents, legal papers, diplomas, and a journal kept by Jean. Also contains DVDs, CDs, and a VHS. Materials dated approximately 1850-2008.

Biographical / Historical

Donald Max Hanks was born June 7, 1926, in Shelley, Idaho to Edward Hanks and Hannah Hanson. Max worked the fields in Idaho as a teenager instead of attending high school and earned his GED during United States Army basic training. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Army in the 1960s, working in the National Guard Engineer Unit. Max married Barbara Jean Poll on June 20, 1944, in Idaho. They lived in Walla, Walla, Washington, and Sunnyside, Washington from 1964 to 1979, where they owned Valley Air Service, Inc. They had four daughters: Susan, Alison, Maxine, and Jeanie. Max died on December 20, 2003, in Shelley, Idaho.

Barbara Jean Poll was born July 7, 1924, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She married Donald Max Hanks on June 20, 1944, in Idaho. They lived in Walla, Walla, Washington, and Sunnyside, Washington from 1964 to 1979, where they owned Valley Air Service, Inc. They had four daughters: Susan, Alison, Maxine, and Jeanie. Max passed away in 2003, and Jean died June 5, 2018, in Shelley, Idaho.
