Biographical / Historical
John Davis Powell Jr. was born on April 4, 1923, in Pocatello, Idaho to John Davis Powell Sr. and Julia Shields. He was raised a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was baptized a member in 1931. During World War II he served in the United States Navy, and after his discharge he married Mary Lorraine Howell on December 20, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They eventually had twelve children. Powell attended college, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. He later worked for the railroad and as a high school teacher. John D. Powell passed away on June 22, 1998, in Pocatello, Idaho.

Mary Lorraine Howell was born on August 7, 1928, in San Bernardino, California to Auburn Allen Howell and Florence Binnington Ward. Raised a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was baptized in 1936. Howell married John Davis Powell Jr. on December 20, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and they eventually had twelve children. She passed away in Idaho Falls, Idaho on December 26, 1997.

Materials were found in a family photo box in 2018 by Vickie Mickelson, a daughter of John D. Powell and Mary Lorraine Powell. She thereafter donated them to the L. Tom Perry Special Collections.
