Scope and Contents

Contains original drawings, loose sketches, and sketchbooks created by artist Travis Hanson for various published and unpublished works. Includes artwork for "The Heart of Discipleship," which was authored by Carmen J. Viola, artwork on other religious themes, comic books, and T-shirt designs. Some artwork includes page mock-ups and text drafts. Sketchbooks include early drawings by Hanson, including one book kept during his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The collection also contains an oral history conducted with Hanson regarding his career and family. Materials dated 1988 to 2019.

Biographical / Historical

Travis Hanson (born 1971) is a professional fantasy illustrator and graphic designer. He has worked in RPG fantasy, children's art, and comics. In 2011, Hanson was nominated for an Eisner Award for "Best Digital" for his book "The Bean," and later published two sequels. Hanson also published "Adventures for a Lazy Afternoon" in 2013, and "Tanner Jones and the Quest for the Monkey Stone" in 2014. His daily comic, "Life of the Party: the Realities of an RPG'er," is ongoing as of 2023.

Appraisal

Utah and the American West and LDS cultural, social, and religious history (21st Century Mormon and Western Manuscripts Collection Development Policy II.B.5.VII). Travis Hanson is an influential Latter-day Saint illustrator who has been instrumental in mentoring younger Latter-day Saint artists. His works depicts an element of pop culture familiar to many late 20th century Latter-day Saints.
