Biographical / Historical

Edwin Brewer (1794-1859) was a newspaper editor in Massachusetts and North Carolina, and cousin of Latter-day Saint bishop Edward Partridge.

Edwin Brewer was born on October 16, 1794, in Tyringham (now Monterey), Massachusetts, to Eliab Brewer and Theodosia Bidwell. His father died in 1804, and, as the oldest son, Edwin was forced to support the family. He obtained a job as a newspaper editor. In 1821 he attended Yale University and graduated in 1823. Soon after graduation, Edwin accepted an invitation to edit a newspaper in Fayetteville, North Carolina, which advocated the election of John Quincy Adams to the US Presidency in 1824. While there he became severely ill and returned to Massachusetts, where he spent the rest of his life writing the occasional article on subjects that interested him, including popular education. Edwin was the cousin of Edward Partridge, first bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, through their common grandfather, Adonijah Bidwell. Edwin's mother, Theodosiah, and Edward's mother, Jemima, were sisters. Their brother was Barnabas Bidwell, who was a Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives (1805-1807), but later fled to Canada after being accused of embezzlement. Edwin Brewer died, unmarried, on July 9, 1859, in Monterey, Massachusetts, from dropsy and other disorders.
