Biographical / Historical

Edwin Hale Lincoln was born on January 2, 1848, in Westminster, Massachusetts to Emeline Sprague and Varnum Lincoln. His family moved to the Cape Cod area later in his childhood. When Edwin was fourteen years old, he got reluctant permission from his father to join the Massachusetts 5th Volunteer Infantry as a drummer boy and surgeon's helper. He served nine months primarily in North Carolina. In 1876, Edwin began his photographic career in a studio in Brockton, Massachusetts. He relocated to the Berkshires in 1893. Edwin used an 8x10 box camera and a lens with no mechanical shutter which he had to cover with a blanket. Working primarily in platinum printing, Edwin gained a national reputation for his work on Wild Flowers of New England. He had five children with his second wife Hattie Beulah Kemp while they lived in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Edwin was killed in an automobile accident in Pittsfield on October 15, 1938.
