Administrative History
Plans for the construction of the Oakland Temple in Oakland, California were announced on January 23, 1961. Groundbreaking occurred on May 26, 1962, and the cornerstone was laid on May 25, 1963. On November 19, 1964, David O. McKay dedicated the temple. The temple's architect was Harold W. Burton, who designed the exterior walls of the temple with white granite and two decorative friezes on the north and south walls. The temple sits prominently atop an Oakland hill and features views of the Bay Area, including downtown Oakland, the Bay Bridge, Yerba Buena Island, downtown San Francisco, and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Biographical history
Curtis Ray Bybee (1914-2011) was a realtor and a Latter-day Saint bishop.
Curtis Ray Bybee was born March 5, 1914 in Kaysville, Utah to Lester Elias and Elva Rose Green Bybee. He attended the University of Utah where he excelled in debate. After university, he moved to Alameda, California. He married Mary Elizabeth Shurtleff on July 17, 1937 in Oakland, California. They raised five children together. Bybee worked as a realtor and broker in Oakland for over 50 years, and he served a term as president of the Oakland Real Estate Board. Bybee also served as a bishop over the Oakland Fourth Ward congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Along with his wife, Bybee moved back to Utah toward the end of his life.
Curtis Ray Bybee died on December 14, 2011 at his home in Pleasant Grove, Utah.
