Andre Norton (1912-2005) was a prolific science fiction and fantasy author.

Over the course of her 70-year career, Norton Wrote more than 130 books, nearly 100 short stories, and edited numerous anthologies in the science fiction, fantasy, mystery and western genres. Norton was known for being the first woman to receive both the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy award, presented by the World Science Fiction Society in 1977, and the Grand Master Award, presented by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1983.

Born as Alice Mary Norton in Cleveland, Ohio on February 17, 1912, she adopted the pen name Andre Norton, which she eventually made her legal name in 1934. Norton attended Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve), intending to become a history teacher, but was forced to drop out her freshman year because of the Great Depression. Taking a job at the Cleveland Public Library, Norton began writing adventure novels on the side. In 1950, she took a job as a reader at Gnome Press, the science-fiction publisher, where she continued to publish her work. By the time she left in 1958 to become a full-time writer, she had published 23 novels and several short stories. In the next two decades, she wrote almost 70 novels and two dozen short stories, and edited several anthologies. She also collaborated with many writers. In 1966, she moved to Florida and later to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where in 1999 she founded High Hallack, a retreat and research library for writers. She closed the library in 2004 shorly before her death. Andre Norton died in Murfreesboro, Tennessee March 17, 2005.
