Topics of the letter include Ambassador Cassius Clay waiting for his successor to be approved by Congress; purchase of Alaska; and the Moscow Railroad. Includes a copy of a photograph of Pomutz. Dated August 1868.

Biographical History
George Pomutz (1818-1882) was a Hungarian American military officer and diplomat.
George Pomutz was born on May 31, 1818, in Gyula, Austrian Empire. He went to military school in the Military Academy in Vienna, and the Military Academy Saint Etienne in France. In 1849 he emigrated to the United States and settled in Keokuk, Iowa, and he became a United States citizen on March 15, 1855. He joined the Union Army at the start of the American Civil War, and in August 1864 he was commander of the 15th Iowa infantry, where four Mormon soldiers were serving. He was eventually appointed brevet brigadier general on March 13, 1865. On February 16, 1866, he was appointed Consul of the United States in Saint Petersburg, Imperial Russia, serving until September 30, 1870. George Pomutz died on October 12, 1882, in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
