Contains the personal and professional papers from Arthur Henry King. Includes papers on Shakespeare, linguistics, King's papers as a professor, his work with the British Council, diaries, written works, papers on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, ranges of numbered research notes on index cards, and other personal papers. Dates range from approximately 1900 to 2000.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur Henry King (1910-2000) was an English professor in Utah.

Arthur Henry King was born on February 20, 1910 to Quaker parents. He graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1931. He then went on to earn his doctorate from the University of Lund, in Sweden. He taught English and English literature for fourteen years at the universities in Lund and Stockholm.

For twenty-eight years, he served on the British Council, which supervises overseas educational and cultural affairs for the British government. He was twice decorated by Queen Elizabeth II for this work.

In 1966, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and, in 1971, he joined the faculty of Brigham Young University. He taught there from 1971 until 1996. Following his retirement from BYU, he presided over the London England Temple of the Church. King had an international reputation as a poet, author and lecturer. He died on January 15, 2000.

Custodial History

Camille Williams and Fred Pinnegar, former students and employees of Arthur Henry King, inherited King's papers. King's papers were then formally donated to Special Collections on March 4, 2008. Installments of the King papers were received in 1984, 1987, and 1996.
