Biographical / Historical
George Stanton Barrus (1925-) was a Communications professor at Brigham Young University.
George Stanton Barrus was born to Foster Junius and Lois Sanders Barrus on February 26, 1925 in Long Beach, California. They returned to Utah in 1927, settling in Tooele. He graduated from Tooele High School in 1943 and began attending the University of Utah. He joined the Navy that same year. He signed on with the Navy V-12 program, which allowed him to continue his pre-med education, and served until 1946. He met Anna Merlynn Droubay on leave in 1944, but his continued service in the military, followed by a mission in Stockholm Sweden Mission from 1946-1948 meant they did not marry until December 1948. They moved to Columbia, Missouri for graduate school until 1950, when they returned to Utah. They then moved to Holbrook, Arizona where Barrus worked for the Holbrook Tribune News. Their first son was born on August 10, 1950. They moved to Idaho so he could work for the Independent-Enterprise in 1953, where their second son was born. Then they moved to Salt Lake City where Barrus worked for the Granite Park Press and ad agencies in the area. He returned to school to get a degree in Elementary Education, so they moved to Cedar City, then he got an M.A. at BYU, beginning his studies in 1962. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, then they returned to Utah where he worked as a faculty member at BYU in the Communications Department, where he worked for many years. They had a total of eight children. They currently live in Provo.
