Biographical / Historical
Salina (1846-) is a city in Sevier County, Utah.
Salina was first settled in 1846 by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints under the direction of church officials. It was named "Salina" because of the salt deposits settlers found nearby. The town had many struggles initially, including troubles with Native Americans on whose hunting grounds they had settled. However, after the town's connection to the state railroad system in 1891, it soon became the shipping terminal between surrounding settlements and the rest of the state. Salina was officially named a city in the state of Utah in 1913. During World War II, Salina was the site of a prisoner of war camp with about 250 German inmates. This POW camp was the site of the 1945 Utah prisoner of war massacre. In the 1940s the Salina Livestock Auction and the Salina Turkey Plant were established, both of which are still operating. A large coal mine also operates in Salina. Salina is currently developing a 400 acre commercial site south of town.
