Biographical history
Alfred Kastner (1870-1948) was a renowned harpist, composer, and teacher.
Alfred Kastner was born in Vienna in 1870. He studied harp under the direction of Antonio Zamara at the Musikverein Konservatorium, graduating as a first prize medalist in 1888.
Kastner started his professional career as a harpist with the Polish National Opera in Warsaw. His career then took him to London in 1904 to play with the Queen's Hall Orchestra.
Later Kastner immigrated to the United States of America playing for the New York Philharmonic, and in 1919 moved to Los Angeles where he taught at the University of Southern California. Kastner spent the rest of his life in California, becoming the principal harpist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra during it's founding, retiring in 1936.
