Biographical History
Ruth Negri is a retired harpist who studied with Marcel Grandjany at Juilliard and played for the New York Philharmonic.
Ruth Negri was born in San Diego, California. She started piano lessons at age four and was eleven when she started the harp. In addition to the harp, she played the double bass because of the scarcity of orchestral harp parts. In high school, Ruth played both harp and bass in the San Diego Symphony. By age sixteen, she was harp soloist with the Los Angeles NBC Orchestra as a finalist in the Hollywood Bowl Auditions of the Air. Ruth studied under Marcel Grandjany at the Juilliard School of Music and graduated in 1950 as a winner of the prestigious Damrosch Scholarship. Ruth was the principal harpist of the New York City Ballet Co. when she graduated in 1950 and continued for nine years. She joined the New York Philharmonic in 1969 and retired in 1997. Ruth married Ben Armato, a retired clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. She has taught at Williamsburg Settlement House, Manhattan School of Music, and privately. In addition, Ruth was adjudicator of the American Harp Society from 1962 to 1988.
