Biographical history
Elbert H. Porter (1917-1999) was a prominent LDS sculptor.
Elbert Heaton Porter was born in Orderville, Utah, on June 1, 1917. In his twenties, Elbert received art training from Maynard Dixon. During World War II, he was a patternmaker for Solar Aircraft Co. in California. On December 18, 1941, Elbert married Frances Brady. After the war ended, Elbert studied at Brigham Young University. He received his master's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Utah and taught sculpture classes there for 12 years. Elbert sculpted a variety of things: Joseph Smith kneeling in the Sacred Grove, the gold-leafed Angel Moroni that was used in five World's Fairs, and dinosaurs for Vernal's dinosaur gardens. He died June 8, 1999.
