Scope and Contents
The collection consists primarily of Glassett’s professional files while working for BYU (course notes, exams, etc.), the Paraho Development Corporation, and his own company, Glassett Associates (reference and consulting files, assorted research proposals, data, and reports, and other related articles, etc., in his areas of specialization). It also contains assorted books, on various religious and scientific subjects, project files, early academic work (University of Utah coursework and exams, as well as early research notebooks and work logs), bibliographies, product advertisements, correspondence, newspaper clippings (copies and originals), slides, cassette tapes, photos and negatives, isometric drawings, and a 23-minute reel-to-reel film entitled “The Story of Gasoline.” Also included are assorted LDS/religious materials (magazine about temples, assorted literature on marriage and family, life, motherhood, beauty, etc., and Book of Mormon records), and scattered University of Utah bacteriology course work materials belonging to one M. Joleen Glassett, 1940-1946.

Biographical History
Joseph M. Glassett (1923-1989) was a chemical engineer who eventually became a professor at Brigham Young University.
Joseph M. Glassett was born the 19th of March, 1923, the only child of Martin C. and Marie Holter Glassett of Salt Lake City, Utah. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in Chemical Engineering, in 1947, and his Master’s in Chemical Engineering the following year from MIT. Between graduation and retirement, Glassett was employed as a Senior Staff Engineer for the American Oil Company, 1960-66, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Brigham Young University, 1966-1980 (researched recovery of oil from tar sands, recovery of minerals from brines, gasification of coal, and distillation of alcohol fuels; specialized in fossil fuels, gasohol, and plant design), Senior Process Engineer for Paraho Development Corporation, 1980-84, and lastly, President of Glassett Associates and consulting chemical engineer, 1984-88. Glassett was named the BYU Chemical Engineering Professor of the Year in 1978. He passed away at his home in Provo on January 1, 1989.
