Biographical History

Jabez Taylor (1840-1919) was an English convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Jabez Taylor was born on April 26, 1840 in Belper, England to William Taylor and Martha Thompson. At a young age, Taylor began working for the Cotton Factory of Messers Strutt and Company. During this time period, Taylor was baptized into the Latter-day Saint faith at the age of twelve. Taylor left the cotton factory at the age of fourteen or fifteen, at which time he began moving around England, living different places for short amounts of time. Despite his zeal for moving around, he eventually caved in to his mother's wishes and returned home to Clay Cross in Derbyshire. Shortly thereafter, Taylor wed Ann Fisher on December 25, 1860. In August 1863, Ann bore Taylor his first son, who died in September. Due to grievance, Ann took sick and "wasted away" according to Taylor, until her death on March 22, 1864. After her death, he moved back home with his mother. Then, on December 16, 1866, Taylor married Mariann Brewer. They parented six children together. Around this time, Taylor moved his family to Utah in order to be closer to the main body of Saints. While living in Salt Lake, Taylor also married Anna Pauline Peterson, with whom he also had six children. Jabez Taylor died on December 16, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
