Minutes from excommunication of Orson Pratt
Scope and Contents
The Orson Pratt, Jr. excommunication minutes describe the court proceedings in the trial of Orson Pratt, Jr. His trial, held on September 18, 1864, was a public meeting held in the bowery in St. George, Utah, to determine whether Pratt should retain his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a result of the trial, Pratt was excommunicated. The single leaf of paper holds roughly ninety-nine lines of handwritten material from the trial.

Biographical History
Orson Pratt, Jr. (1837-1903) was a musician and music instructor in Salt Lake City, and the son of apostle Orson Pratt, Sr., of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Orson Pratt Jr. was born in Kirtland, Ohio on July 11, 1837, to Orson and Sarah Pratt. The son of Latter-day Saint apostle Orson Pratt, Sr., he served in the British Mission in 1856. Pratt was excommunicated from the Latter-day Saint Church in 1864 after publicly denouncing Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church. He died on December 6, 1903 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Orson Pratt, Jr. excommunication minutes were initially purchased by Ken Sanders of Ken Sanders Rare Books from George A. Burgon. Following this purchase, the company contacted the L. Tom Perry Special Collections to see if they were interested in the document. On April 23, 2009, L. Tom Perry Special Collections completed the purchase.
