Scope and Contents note

The collection contains a program entitled "A Century and a Half of Shared Dedication" for the 150th anniversary of the Church dinner. It also includes a letter by David Whittaker to the donors, and a letter by Wendell Ashton explaining the receiving of an 1841 Book of Mormon presented to Queen Victoria. Speeches from the dinner are also enclosed, including a copy of the typescript of Ronald Reagan's speech for the anniversary dinner, a message of welcome by Ezra Taft Benson, Gordon B. Hinckley's speech entitled "Truth Has Prevailed," and a response to the Ronald Reagan speech at the anniversary dinner by Sir Rhodes Boyson.

Biographical History

Wendell J. Ashton was born October 31, 1912 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Marian Reynolds April 24, 1940. He was the mission president of the London England Mission when the 150th anniversary for the LDS church was celebrated. He died August 30, 1995.

Abstract

The collection consists of speeches made by President Ronald Reagan, Gordon B. Hinckley, Ezra Taft Benson and Sir Rhodes Boyson at the celebratory 150th anniversary dinner of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England. It also includes letters by David Whittaker to the donor Wendell J. Ashton.
