Administrative History
Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI) was established in 1868 in order to try to keep Salt Lake business strong with the coming of the railroad.
Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution, commonly known as ZCMI, was established in 1868 in Salt Lake City. It was orginally founded under Brigham Young and a group of other business and community leaders in order to try to keep Salt Lake business strong with the coming of the railroad. It sold various goods, including clothing, wagons, sewing items, and machinery and in its first year made over 1.25 million dollars. It became the first department store in the US and became very popular in the Salt Lake area. It continued to play a significant role in the Salt Lake community for many years. Starting in 1999 ZCMI would switch hands several times. In 1999 it was sold to May Department Stores Company, followed by Meier and Frank in 2002, Macy's in 2006, and is currently closed for construction.
