Biographical History

Smith Alson Woodard (1841-1919) fought for the Union during the Civil War.

Smith Alson Woodard was born on February 11, 1841 in Niagara City, New York to John Madison Woodard and Christina Dygert. On December 14, 1862 he married Betsy Anne Wheaton, the daughter of George Wheaton and Ocean Marvin. In 1863 he enlisted in the army and fought for the Union during the Civil War as part of the 118th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. He returned in 1864 and the couple eventually raised nine children. S. Alson Woodard died on May 4, 1919 in Hillsdale, Michigan.
