Photographs, letters, and six volumes of diaries of Francis D. Hughes. Some items are photocopied, some are typed as well. The first journal begins in Cardiff, Wales. Hughes is preaching for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and sharing a spiritual vision he had. He enjoys success in his preaching in spite of rampant anti-Mormon literature. In the second journal, he is continuing to preach in Lampeter County, United Kingdom. There are inspiring stories of faithful church members. In the fourth journal (the third is missing), he is still strengthening the Church in England. He writes his grandmother about seeing a “frightful” Sea Lion from the African coast, and about the Civil War. He then urges her to join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In the fifth journal, Hughes copied extracts from the journal of Elder William Ajax. He mentions the Crimean War. The Church has some struggling members and needs regulation. In the seventh journal (the sixth is missing), Hughes records trials and penalties affixed for some serious crimes. The eighth journal, easiest to read, describes some healings. He does some leisurely activities as well as preaching: visiting Welsh castles, pushing wheelbarrow blindfolded with friends and sea bathing. He rides on a train pulled by horses. He describes a conference. He describes his wife, Harriet’s visions of the spirit world, shortly before she passed away. He has a vision after she dies. He writes a poem for her. He closes with advice to his children.
