Administrative History
The first settlement of Utah County was Provo City. It was led by local Mormon leaders until January 28, 1850, when the General Assembly of the State of Deseret declared all of Utah Valley as Utah County and named Provo the county seat. The first probate judge, Preston Thomas, was appointed in 1852.
Administrative History
Provo City was named for an early 19th century French-Canadian trapper, Etienne Provost. He first entered the Great Salt Lake Basin in 1824. In 1849 Mormon pioneers established a permanent settlement in Provo and it was named county seat in 1850. Brigham Young Academy was established there in 1875, playing a large role in the development of the community.
