Charles Durkee correspondence
Scope and Contents note
There are three letters in the Charles Durkee correspondence written to Friend Cheney.
1) July 11 or 16, 1859, from Kenasher, Wisconsin. Durkee regrets to learn that Cheney and his wife are sick. He gives Cheney estimates on the cost of land around Lake Michigan. He says business is still depressed in the West.
2) February 2, 1860, from Washington. Durkee tells Cheney that General Fenton will work to influence the committee for a favorable report on Cheney’s petition. If General Fenton gets a bill framed in the House, Durkee will work on getting support for Cheney’s petition in the Senate.
3) December 16, 1861, from Kenasher, Wisconsin. Durkee gives Cheney information on buying a lot in Waukegan, Illinois. Durkee says he is confident that God will [overrule] whatever takes place in the present struggle for the liberation of the oppressed and the diffusion of free principles.
