Scope and Contents note

The collection contains three journals: 1. A 3 by 5 inch red book entitled Southern States Mission containing poetry, priesthood ordinance instructions, ideas and humor about teaching Baptists, addresses and a record of received funds. Writer of the journal is uncertain. 2) A 3.5 by 6 inch mission journal for Willard H. Farnes, January 8, 1902 – July 4, 1902. 3) A 4.5 by 7.5 burgundy book, covering Willard H. Farnes’ mission from July 5, 1902 to April 26, 1903. Includes a list of meeting locations and topics.

There are family biographies for the following people: Christian Daniel Fjelsted (including photographs and articles from Church publications), John Burnside Farnes, Edith Farnes Budd, and Ebenezer Farnes (including his obituary).

There is a typescript of a book written by Irene D. Paden, The Wake of the Prairie Schooner, 1943, about retracing the Mormon Pioneer Trail past Independence Rock, Devils Gate, Echo Canyon and other landmarks. Includes detailed descriptions of the landmarks and the history of pioneers who traveled. There are directions to Three Crossings, on the Sweetwater River in Wyoming. There is a paper called Sparkling Water about Ebenezer Farnes and other men settling in Soda Springs, Idaho, in 1870. This paper contains segments from Ebenezer Farnes’ journal.

Other papers include: 1. A newspaper clipping of the Farnes Family Reunion, June 18, 1916. 2. The translation of Plubius Lentulus’ description of Jesus. 3. A land title of Salt Lake City property of Joseph Taylor, deceased. 4. Poem of Spanish-American War veteran. 5. Missionary blessing of Elder Willard Farnes, January 7, 1902. 6. Nine-page history of the life of Martha Elizabeth Ashworth Brian.

Biographical History

Willard Henry Farnes was born October 21, 1877 in Logan, Cache, Utah to Ebenezer Farnes and Veta Josephine Fjeldsted. He married Barabara Hyslop Brown September 28, 1904 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died July 23, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
