Scope and Contents note

The two volumes of the Walter Joshua Stevens journals are as follows:

Volume 1: Account book pages of Walter Joshua Stevens Sr., 1901-1903. 26 pages in pencil. Some pages are smudged badly.

Volume 2: Mexico Mission Journal for Walter Joshua Stevens Jr., 1908. Brief daily entries discuss Stevens’ visiting of backsliders, attending meetings, giving lessons and tracting. He served in the cities Avenida, Ozumba, Tecalco, Toluca and Tlalpam. President Pratt was the mission president. Some Elders he served with were Elder D. V. Farnsworth, Elder N. W. Thayne, Elder Law, Elder Williams, Elder Le Ray, Elder Allen, Elder Whipple, Elder Simon Y. Beck, and Elder Cardon. Written in a Spanish Agenda for 1908. 68 pages. 3 by 5.5 inches.

Biographical History

Walter Joshua Stevens Sr. (1856-1912) married twice. He had fourteen children with his first wife and one with his second wife. He was killed during the Mormon Exodus.

Walter Joshua Stevens Sr. was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah on December 21, 1856. He married Elizabeth Alma Kenney on September 25, 1879 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had fourteen children: Phebe Elizabeth (1881-1934), Walter Joshua Jr. (1883-1959), Rebecca “Becky” (1885-1968), John Alma (1886-1890), Ella Stevens (1889-1955), William Alden (1891-1969), Ammon Cannon (1893-1978), Emma (1895-1976), Abigail Elizabeth (1897-1979), Elmina Gloria (1898-1970), Vivian (1900-1978), Daniel Edward (1902-1976), Brigham Ezekiel “Brig” (1903-1988) and Marian Joseph (1907-1975). He also married a Sarah Ellis Hawley (later divorced) on November 30, 1900 in Colonia Garcia, Old Mexico. Walter Stevens Sr. and Sarah had one daughter, Grace Hawley, on September 5, 1901 in Colonia, Garcia, Old Mexico. He was killed during the Mormon Exodus from Mexico in Pacheco, Chihuahua on August 26, 1912.

Biographical History

Walter Joshua Stevens was born 27 February 1883 in Fruitland, San Juan, New Mexico. He served an LDS mission in Mexico in 1908. He married Cora Alzenia Sweat on May 1910 in Holden, Millard, Utah. Walter died May 1959 in Cortez, Montezuma, Colorado.
